Difficulties in Turning Rolls

25 November 2022
The rolling mill is widely used in the metallurgical industry, and the roll as the main working part determines the efficiency of the rolling mill and the quality of the rolling material. Therefore, when turning the roll, the choice of cubic boron nitride tool (CBN tool) is critical.

At present, the standard rolls are high nickel-chromium alloy cast iron rolls, infinite chilled cast iron rolls, forged steel cold rolls, high boron steel roll groove processing, rebar rolls, wire high-speed steel rolls, as-cast high-speed steel rolls, etc.

The main processing forms are cylindrical blank turning, hole turning, heavy cutting, crescent groove processing, flat head milling, roll repair, and other processing forms.
Difficulties in Turning Rolls

Problems faced by turning rolls:
1. The quality is heavy, and heavy-duty cutting is difficult.
The rolls that need to be turned are generally large in size and heavy in quality. Compared with ordinary cutting, they have the characteristics of large cutting depth, relatively low cutting speed, and relatively slow feed speed.
Therefore, their processing technology is different from ordinary ones. Mechanical cutting processes are very other.

These process characteristics exist in the reduction of rigidity and stability of the machine tool, the selection of tools, the installation of tools, the selection of cutting amounts, and the clamping of workpieces; especially the high hardness and heavy parts are the most difficult to process.

2. Large size and long processing time.

Most of the rolls that need to be turned are large in size, the processing time for a single piece is long, and the tool is prone to wear before it reaches the end, resulting in rework and frequent tool changes, which affect the processing efficiency.

3. After adding other elements, the hardness is high, and the cutting difficulty increases.
In order to improve the hardness, wear resistance, and thermal strength of the roll and prevent the roll from cracking, elements such as molybdenum, manganese, and chromium are also added during the production process of the roll to form an alloy layer on the surface of the roll to prolong the life of the roll. The increase in service life increases the difficulty of cutting the roll to a certain extent.

4. Defects are unavoidable and processing conditions are complex.
Some of the rolls that need to be turned have defects such as sand inclusion, pores, and hard spots, and the processing conditions are complex, which leads to the phenomenon of tool chipping or even clumping.

Common cutting tools on the market today include carbide cutting tools, ceramic cutting tools, and cubic boron nitride cutting tools (CBN cutting tools).

However, with the improvement of the hardness, wear resistance, processing efficiency, and processing accuracy of the roll, the traditional tools have been unable to meet the processing requirements of the roll.
Although cubic boron nitride cutting tools can meet the needs of processing rolls, the performance of cubic boron nitride cutting tools (CBN cutting tools) is slightly different due to different manufacturers and manufacturing processes.
