The Importance of Choosing the Right Insert Cutting Edge Type

Correct selection and application of cutting-edge treatment are considered to be one of the basic elements of successful manufacturing and correct use of hard turning tools. The insert cutting edge treatment has different processing forms and parameters for different application conditions.

What is insert cutting edge?

The insert cutting edge refers to the interface between the front and back surfaces of the tool insert where the workpiece material separates to form chips and the machined surface.

What is the cutting-edge treatment?

Cutting edge treatment refers to the process of cutting edge chamfering, passivation, leveling, and polishing after fine grinding and before coating (if any), to improve the quality and service life of cutting tools.

Why do we need cutting-edge treatment?

After grinding the tool insert with a diamond grinding wheel, there will always be a certain degree of the micro notch on the edge, such as a tiny chipping edge, saw edge, etc. In the process of cutting, the micro notch on the cutting edge is easy to expand, which will accelerate the tool wear and damage. To eliminate the micro-defects of the cutting edge, the cutting edge should be treated.

After doing cutting edge treatment, the tool edge can be strengthened, but also improve the wear resistance of the cutting tool, thus prolonging the tool life.

Common treatment forms of insert cutting edge:

Generally, the cutting-edge treatment can be divided into four forms: F, E, T, and S.

Common Treatment Forms of Insert Cutting Edges

1, F shape cutting edge-----sharp edges

F shape sharp cutting edge (no chamfer and no passivation) is not easy lead to chatter marks and is too sharp, the durability is slightly poor, the cutting force and shear deformation is small, the cutting heat is low, but the cutting edge strength is also very low, the edge has initial defects, rarely used.

2, E shape cutting edge----Honing
E shape cutting edge is honing edge without chamfer, can reduce micro chipping, help to improve the edge integrity, but is has a greater cutting force and better resistance than sharpe edge. The heavier for the honing, the better for the cutting edge shape and cutting strength. It is often used for precision milling inserts.

3, T shape cutting edge----Chamfering
T shape cutting edge (chamfering) can improve the impact resistance of the cutting edge, it can improve the quality of the processed surface and help to ensure dimensional stability. It can replace S-shaped cutting edge when cutting force is required to be reduced and tolerance is required to be high. But its anti-collapse ability is poor. Mostly used for fine turning hardened steel with small margin(ap<0.1).

4, S shape cutting edge----Chamfering + honing
S shape cutting edge is the most widely used cutting edge and and it is also the preferred insert type in hard turning. It has higher strength than T-type, which is more resistant to edge chipping and cracking, is easier to predict cutting tool life, and can produce more stable workpiece surface quality. It is especially suitable for large cutting depth and intermittent processing. S shape cutting edge has the best comprehensive cutting performance.

Also have K and P type cutting edge. If need can be supplied. Mostly are used for ceramic inserts.
