Customer Case-Ceramic Insert Machining Cast Iron
Recently one of our Brazilian customers needed ceramic inserts for machining cast iron.
According to the experience of our MORESUPERHARD professional engineers, we recommend the use of CBN inserts for processing cast iron.
Although ceramic inserts can process cast iron, the wear resistance and impact resistance are much worse than CBN inserts.
However, the smoothness and accuracy of ceramic inserts when processing cast iron are much better than CBN inserts.
Since this customer has been using ceramic inserts, the customer still insists on using ceramic inserts.
After one-on-one communication between our engineers and customers, we got the following information:
Processing method: continuous processing
Processing material: cast iron (hardness of cast iron is 180 – 220)
The insert brand used by the customer before: TaeguTec
Brand: AW20 (Al2O3+ZrO2)
The price of the inserts used by the customer before was relatively high, and he hoped to find more cost-effective inserts.
Processing parts: engine parts
Common cast iron parts in engines include:
Cylinder block: The main structure of the engine, including the cylinder liner and engine base. The cylinder block is usually made of cast iron because cast iron has good strength and rigidity and can withstand high temperature and high pressure working environments.
Crankshaft: The main component connecting the pistons to the crankcase. Crankshafts are usually made of cast iron because cast iron has good wear resistance and strength and can withstand high pressure and high speed loads.
Connecting Rod: The component that connects the crankshaft to the piston. Connecting rods are usually made of cast iron because cast iron has good strength and wear resistance and can withstand high temperature and high pressure working environments.
Piston: A movable component located within a cylinder that converts air pressure generated by combustion into mechanical energy. Pistons are usually made of cast iron because cast iron has good wear resistance and heat conduction properties and can withstand high temperature and high pressure working environments.
Valve guide: The moving part used to guide the valve on the cylinder block. Valve guides are typically made of cast iron to provide wear resistance and heat transfer properties.
These components all play an important role in the engine.
